Social Security

Social Security was established in 1935 as a federal insurance program to pay financial benefits to people over 65 and disabled citizens.  Currently, there are over 55 million people receiving Social Security. With 3.5 million baby boomers turning 65 every year, that number will continue to rise over the next several years.

  • Today Social Security is a key income source for many seniors and many more could not retire without this benefit.
  • For 40% of retires, Social Security is their sole source of retirement income.
  • For 7 out of 10 Americans, Social Security makes up 37% of total retirement income.
  • 21% of married people and 45% of single people rely on Social Security for 90% of their income

After a lifetime of paying into the system, you want to get the most from your benefits. Unfortunately, too many of us oversimplify the process.  It is important to understand, once you make your decision, your choice is most likely final.

Medicare Is Big Business.  The amount of money spent by the government and private sector has the attention of every insurance company, broker, and agent in the country. By now you have experienced numerous ads through the mail, TV, and radio.  With so much riding on your decision, who do you trust?  The best advice may be to simply trust yourself.  You need to do some of the things you would rather not. You are taking a good first step to understanding Medicare.

Asset Preservation

What is Asset Preservation?  Simply defined, it is planning with the intent to protect loss of your assets from creditor or other legal claims. Some common examples would be the various forms of insurance.  Life insurance to replace lost wages allows surviving spouse to continue paying the mortgage avoiding foreclosure. Homeowners insurance replaces lost or damaged property. Liability insurance provides protections if you are involved in the personal injury of another person or their property.

Estate and Medicaid planning are examples of asset preservation that utilizes trusts, powers of attorney and other legal instruments for property transfers to protect your assets.   A will is an excellent example of asset preservation that everyone should use.  By providing guidance for your asset’s distribution in your will, you can limit claims made on your assets and facilitates property transfers to the loved ones of your choice.

Long Term Care planning is another part of asset preservation. It is of specific interest if you would rather not utilize Medicaid Planning. One drawback to Medicaid planning is there may be a requirement to give up legal ownership of property to help protect your assets from creditors.

Technology & Ageing

Technology can be a great connivence. Today, it is so easy to connect with family and friends by simply opening our smartphone.  Online shopping is another advantage of technology. From groceries to cars, just about anything you need can be ordered and delivered to your front door.  These services are becoming more and more ingrained into or daily living but, have you ever wondered how technology could play a bigger role in your life as you age?

“Ageing in place “is a new phrase used to describe just how technology will aid Seniors to continue to live safely and independently in their homes as they age.

These new technologies allow a caregiver to monitor your personal health status as well as your home environment from a distance using just a smartphone and an app.  Most of us are familiar with Medic Alert.  The “help, I’ve fallen and can’t get up” commercial has been around for over 20 years and technology has come a long way in this time.  Today medical devices not only allow for an emergency response with the touch of a button but, so much more.   You can visit your doctor virtually from your home.  Blood pressure, glucose sugar levels and even EKG readings of your heart can be done and the information sent directly to your doctor or caregiver without leaving your home.  Maybe you personally are not in need of these service today?  Perhaps you are a caregiver and helping an aging parent?  Nothing replaces being there but, how helpful would it be to be able to watch over someone in your care by simply opening an app on your smartphone or tablet anytime of the day or night?  New tools and technology are being developed every day that could help us all be safer as we Age in Place.

Please request your Free SENIOR S.M.A.R.T.® guide HERE to see how technology can help you “Age In Place”.
